Bring the Disney Magic to new locations

Why an indoor park?
Typically there are two types of theme/amazement parks:
  1. Year Round Operations - A park located in warmer climates that allow for year long operating (Disney's current operating model)
  2. Seasonal Operating Model - A park located in a climate with colder winter temperatures and potential for snow.  Based on weather the park closes for the winter season with a shorter operating year
There are several issues with the seasonal operating model:
  • Reduced annual operating income based on seasonal schedule reduces available funding to invest to new attractions/projects.
  • Maintenance costs during off season without offsetting revenues
  • Complete shutdown of cast members jobs during off season.  Difficult to maintain talent and increased costs to staff cast members for season openings.
The issue with the year round operating model is that you are limited southern areas of the country for park locations.  For the majority of the country extensive travel is required to experience the Disney Magic.  This limits most families from regular visits to the Disney parks.  Many families can only arrange/afford that once in a lifetime trip to Walt Disney World.

The indoor park concept allows Disney to expand to footprint into all new areas and with greater frequency; Extending the Magic.  Even frequent Disney vacationers would benefit to have the ability to travel to a more regional park while still visiting the Walt Disney World for their annual vacation.

Overall, extending the Disney Magic to new areas previously not possible.

The Spark

Imagine a Walt Disney Park that is always a perfect 72 degrees and the rain never falls. Guests can just walk from their resort rooms directly into the park.  Where could you find a geographic location where the weather is also perfect? It can be anywhere because it is a fully enclosed park. The full enclosed space allow the benefit of the broadest possible site planning not constrained to the all year warmer climates. While it does provide a benefits of expanding the Disney brand to area that were not previously possible; it does bring new challenges in master planning.

This project is to take the challenge and design a Disney indoor park that would be ability to have placement in your backyard.

I live in the Minneapolis area. The Mall of America is a super-regional shopping and entertainment center. In the United States, it is the second largest enclosed mall in terms of retail space but is largest in terms of total enclosed floor area. Opened in 1992, the mall received 40 million visitors in 2006 and still continues to grow. Mall of America has a gross area of 4.2 million sq ft. (390,000 m²), with 2.5 million sq ft. (230,000 m²) available as retail space.
In addition to retail space in an indoor amazement park.  Nickelodeon Universe is an indoor theme park in the center of the mall, formerly known as Knotts Camp Snoopy, Camp Snoopy, and The Park at MOA. The park features roller coasters, among numerous other rides and attractions, and is the largest indoor theme park in the United States. Unlike many indoor amusement parks, Nickelodeon Universe has a great deal of natural foliage in and about the park, and its floor has a wide variance in height - the highest ground level in the park is 15 feet above the lowest. This allows for a far more naturalistic experience than would normally occur in an indoor amusement park.

The park features two new roller coasters; SpongeBob SquarePants Rock Bottom Plunge and Avatar Airbender.
It also has a golfing section called Moose Mountain. With 18 holes, designed to create a challenge for players hoping to seek a hole in one.

The Spark is to create an self contained resort and theme park under one roof.  Below is simple concept of combining resorts, park lands, shopping and entertainment into unified themes to create an immersive experience from waking to entering the park.

Being an Imagineer

Is your dream job to work for Disney?  And not just any job but the best job; an Imagineer.
This site is for all the Disney fans who have always wanted to be an Imagineer.  The goal is to leverage the Imagineer in all of us to design the next Disney Park from Big Sky Planning to detailed design of the attractions, shows and restaurants that create all the story elements.
I am looking for anyone with a love of all things Disney and want to help in the planning and design of the next Disney park.  While I may never be an Imagineer for Disney; I can behave like one.
